Gastric Bypass Surgery is very much the last resort for the severely obese, especially for those who have tried to lose weight by following conventional methods such as diets and exercise. To be considered for this surgical procedure the patient must be, with a BMI between 35-40, or severely obese, having a body mass index in excess of 40. It is also possible to have the surgery if the patient has a major disease that would benefit from weight loss, for example if they suffer from high blood pressure or diabetes.

What is involved

Gastric bypass surgery involves on of two forms of surgery, called restrictive surgery and malabsorptive surgery respectively.

Malabsoptive surgery is a technique that shortens the digestive tract, thus reducing the amount of food that your body can actually absorb. There are two types of malabsorptive surgery that are commonly used, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and billiopancreatic diversion.

The roux-en-y method involves the division of the stomach, thus creating a small pouch which limits the amount of calories that can be consumed to just 1000 per day. Most of the stomach is then sealed off and a piece of the small intestine is attached to the stomach pouch. The surgery can either be performed by general open surgery or by less-invasive techniques.

The biliopancreatic diversion approach is more complicated than Roux-en-Y and portions of the stomach are actually removed from the body during the procedure. Once again a small pouch is created, but this is connected directly to the end of the small intestine, thus bypassing the duodenum and jejunum. This procedure is less common than Roux-en-Y as it carries a high risk of nutritional problems.

Restrictive surgery, which is classically known as “stomach stapling” is a procedure which reduces the size of the stomach so that, to begin with, it can only hold a single ounce. This has the effect of an immediate reduction in calorie intake and weight loss thus ensues.
